The ’05 Orange Shamrocks took to the ice for the first time in 2017 in a non-league game vs. the New England Stars in Tyngsboro at Skate 3 on Sunday 1/8/17. Battling the elements the night before and cleaning up after the winter’s first snow storm, the Shamrocks looked to bring the storm themselves to Tyngsboro. And, the kids in Orange and Green did not disappoint.
Play was tight to open the game and Shamrocks outstanding goalie, Jake McLean was up to the task, taking on all comers and shutting the door. The defensive core of Ava Vautour, Coleman Connors, Ryan Monaco, Nico Schmalz, and Johnny Dalton kept the puck on the outside and moved quickly out of the zone all day long. Forechecking and quick passes was the name of the game for the Forward core of Tyler Beals, Matt DiZoglio, Colby Robinson, Andrew Cappella, Kurt Vilmunen, Mitch DeVaux, Patrick Mozuch, Nick Shinopolous, and Keenan Considine.
With 8:30 remaining in the first, the Shamrocks struck on an unassisted laser from Cappella. He came in wide, made the goalie move, and fired a bomb far-side, high for the goal. Cappella would go on to have a monster game. 6 minutes later DeVaux would find the net off a beautiful feed from Cappella.
The 2nd period was all Shamrocks. Mozuch blasted a goal past the Stars goalie with help from Nick Shinopolous, who took the hit to make the pass, and Ava Vautour. Cappella would go on to close out scoring in the 2nd period with an unassisted goal for the Shamrocks to take a commanding 4-0 lead into the 3rd period. His second goal of the game, and his 3rd point.
With a short lull in the early 3rd period, one of the Stars forwards got free of the smothering Shamrock defense and put a shot past McLean. But, that would be it for the Stars offense for the day. The Shamrocks De took the goal personally and shut down the Stars the rest of the way. During this time, the De was also able to get in on the offense with end to end rushes by Schmalz, good cross ice passing by Dalton, 2 assists for the day by Vautour, pinching play at the Blue line to keep the puck in by Connors, and big shots from the blue line by Monaco. With 1:30 left in the game Robinson got back the 4 goal lead off an assist by DiZoglio. Tyler Beals would go on to close out the scoring with: 57 left on the clock. Assists came from forward Robinson and defenseman Vautour.
The Shamrocks were able to keep their winning ways going through hard work, and team oriented play. They look forward to taking aim at their next challenge, a tilt against the Manchester Flames at home.
