The North Shore Shamrocks celebrated their Thanksgiving by treating their family and fans to a great run of tournament hockey on Thanksgiving weekend at the Maine Hockey Development Turkey Shootout held at the University of Southern Maine, Gorham. The '05 Orange Pee Wee Minor team displayed everything the Shamrocks are known for; Hard Work, Determination, Good Sportsmanship, and Hustle.
The Shamrocks opened up the weekend with a 2-2 tie against a tough, disciplined Southern Maine Huskies team.
But the story of the game was Shamrock's net minder, Jake McLean. With the Huskies bearing down on the Shamrocks hard in the 3rd period and a 2-2 tie on the score board, McLean held his ground and refused to let his team suffer a loss; All this, on his way to collecting the game 1 MVP medal.
Game 2 became a much different affair, as the Shamrocks traded goals with Maine Gladiators in the first period 1-1. Rugged Defenseman, Casey Robbins scored on a bullet shot off of an assist by speedy winger, Matt DiZoglio for the Shamrock's only score of the period.
This game went on to put the Shamrocks discipline on full display for all to see as the Gladiators racked up 11 penalties in the game to the Shamrocks 2. Having had enough of the feeling out process of the first period, the Shamrocks went on a tear in the 2nd with 4 goals to close the 2nd period with a 5-2 lead. Specifically, DiZoglio lit the lamp 3 times in the 2nd period for the natural hattrick on his way to game MVP honors. Assists went to center man, Tyler Beals on 2 of the 2nd period goals with great unselfish play. Shifty winger, Colby Robinson also collected a goal in the second, beating the Gladiator goalie 5 hole. While the 3rd period saw the Gladiators score their 3rd and final goal, the Shamrocks dominated play for much of the 3rd period, keeping any thoughts of late game breakdowns at bay.
Game 3 was a much different affair, as the Shamrocks had to give everything they had to gain a win against the Casco Bay Mariners of Maine. Jumping out to a 4-1 lead early in the second period, led by Center, Tyler Beals, the Shamrocks looked to dominate. However, Casco Bay had different ideas. The Mariners scored 3 unanswered goals to bring the contest to within 1. But the Shamrocks would hold on with a lot of great defensive plays. While Tyler Beals gained the game 3 MVP honors, a lot of the credit also goes to the hardworking defensive core of Coleman Connors, Ava Vautour, Ryan Monaco, Nico Schmalz, and Casey Robbins.
This set up a Gold medal match between the North Shore Shamrocks and the Central Maine Hornets. Both teams entered the Championship with 2 wins, no losses, and 1 tie. It would go on to be a titanic battle with the Shamrocks striking first. The Hornets would strike back taking a 2-1 lead into the 2nd period. The Shamrocks would go on to tie it at 2-2.
The entirety of the game was back and forth with every Shamrock giving everything they had to a skater. None more than hustling forward, Finn Glidden, who would go on to receive the game MVP honors for his outstanding hard work.
As they say, the Shamrocks didn't lose; they just ran out of time on the clock. With a final of 5-3, the Shamrocks took home the Silver medal. And, more importantly, the respect of all the teams in their division at the tournament.
