Tough Weekend For ‘02 Squirt Minors / 02 Squirt Minor

Monday, February 6, 2012, 4:00PM

The ‘02 Squirt Minors started the weekend off with an EHF match up with the Minuteman Flames on Saturday morning at the Ristuccia Arena.  This was a well matched game with the action going up and down the ice the entire game.  Both teams had many chances, but the game remained scoreless after the first period.  The Flames struck first at the 11:19 mark of the second period.  Just 90 seconds later Jack Canto put a wrist shot past the Flames goalie to even it up at 1-1.  CJ Petrie feedCanto with a nice pass earning an assist on the goal.

The second period ended with the score still tied 1-1.  The Shamrocks took the lead at the 11:38 mark of the third period when Anthony Cuozzo scored off his own rebound.  Canto got his second of the game just 90 seconds later for an insurance goal.  Storm Davis and Kyle Inglis were credited with the assists on Canto’s goal.  The Shamrocks held on for the 3-1 win.

Several hours later the Shamrocks faced the North Shore Comets at the Ristuccia Arena for a Mass Selects game.  The Comets beat the green and white 9-2 earlier in the season and would once again skate away easily with a 10-1 victory.  The Shamrocks only goal came with 1:30 left in the third period when Alex Ver Colen found a way to beat the Comets goaltender.  Shamrocks goalie Kenny Dunne was peppered in this one and made many great saves. However, the Shamrocks could not generate any offense against a very fast Comets team.

On Sunday morning the Shamrocks headed out west to Cushing Academy for their fourth game this season against the Central Mass Outlaws.  Having lost the first three games by scores of 7-3,7-1 and 7-1 the Shamrocks were hoping to have a better result this time.   The first period ended with the Outlaws up 1-0.  The Shamrocks, having one of their best games of the season, held the Outlaws scoreless in the second period.

At the 12:27 mark of the third period Cuozzo found the back of the net and evened this hard fought game at 1-1.  Davis earned the assist on the goal.  The Outlaws struck back three minutes later and recapture the lead at 2-1.  The Shamrocks evened it up at 2-2 when Chris Fabbo poked one past the Outlaws goalie at 7:23 of the third period.  Robbie Courtney and Harry Serounian were credited with assists this time.  The Outlaws scored two quick goals a minute apart giving them a 4-2 lead with only 2:48 left in the game.  The green and white attacked with all they had but just didn't have enough to make another come back and the game ended with a 4-2 win for the Outlaws. Once again Dunne was super in net keeping this a close game.

BREAKING NEWS... Mass Selects Expands To 15 Programs Beginning In 2012-13 Season

Saturday, February 4, 2012, 8:00AM

Looking to take regional youth hockey development to the next level, the Massachusetts Selects Youth Hockey League (MSYHL), in an unprecedented move, has added six programs from the International Junior Youth Hockey League (IJYHL) to form a 15-member league that will begin play during the 2012-13 season. The expanded (MSYHL) brings together established Tier 1 programs stretching from Rhode Island to Southern New Hampshire and out to Central Massachusetts.

The goal is to put the top programs and top youth players from the region in a single league which will emphasize skills and character development. The combination of so many teams with an abundance of heritage and talent have come together to form what can only be called the new leading AAA youth hockey league in New England.

“This area of the country is a hockey hotbed and our goal is to create a youth development system that is the envy of the rest of the nation,” said IJYHL Commisioner Mike Bonish. “We believe this will be a vital step in fostering the next golden generation of players to come out of southern New England.”

The addition of the IJ programs to the MSYHL is the culmination of discussions that started prior to the start of the current season

“Everyone involved started on the same page in terms of wanting to make a league that delivers the best possible experience for the players and families involved,” said MSYHL President Tim Murray. “The coaching, the facilities, the level of competition, everything will be top shelf. We’re going to be setting a new standard for what constitutes elite hockey. We are excited to embark on this next chapter in the growth of our league.”

The MSYHL will now be home to the following programs: 495 Stars, Boston Jr. Blackhawks, Boston Stars, Central MA Outlaws, Conquistadors, Dover Stars, Manchester Flames, New England Bulldogs, New England Predators, New England Stars, North Suburban Wings, North Shore Raiders, North Shore Shamrocks, Rhode Island Hitmen, and Rhode Island Stars

Casey's Two Last Minute Goals Gives ‘00 Pee Wee Minors Well Earned Tie / 00 Peewee Minor

Monday, January 9, 2012, 12:00AM

Traveling to Cushing Academy to face the Central Mass Outlaws, the ‘00 Pee Wee Minor Shamrocks were looking for their first win against this tough opponent. First period action was back and forth. The Shamrocks had multiple chances to get the scoring started only to be thwarted by a stingy Outlaw defense. The Shamrock defense, anchored by goalie Alec DeGregorio and defensemen Timmy Bridges, Sean Loescher, Ryan Chambers, Jacob Pineau and Nick Bisconti did an excellent job of taking care of the puck in their own end, but the Outlaws were able to net the first tally of the game late in the first period.

The second period continued good play from both sides. The Shamrocks knotted a goal late in the second period when Sean Casey won an offensive zone draw back to the right point and Loescher blasted a shot on net. The Outlaw goalie made the initial save but Sky Cummings banged home the rebound to tie it up at 1-1. The second period would end with the score at 3-2 in favor of the Outlaws after the teams traded goals. The Shamrocks second goal came from Bryan Govostes on assists from Dom Murray and Loescher.

The third period saw the intensity get ratcheted up with stellar efforts from Shamrocks Anthony Nasta, Dante Centrella, John Keaney, Dan McNamara, and Jason Haggarty. The Outlaws managed to get one more score in the third, but were turned away on other chances by some fine goaltending from Ryan Vogel. Down by two entering the last few minutes of the game, the Shamrocks pulled Vogel for an extra skater and buzzed the Outlaw goalie with some tenacious pressure. They were finally rewarded when Casey struck for an unassisted tally with 47 seconds left on the clock. On the ensuing faceoff, the Shamrocks took possession of the biscuit and drove it deep into Outlaw territory. With Cummings and Nasta crashing the offensive zone, Vogel again raced to the bench for the sixth attacker. The Shamrocks were able to pin the Outlaws deep in their own end and Casey again found himself in a position to pounce on the puck and bury it in the net. The Shamrocks tied it on Casey's second strike of the game with only 24 seconds left to play. It was a well deserved 4-4 tie for a Shamrocks team that kept digging from start to finish.

The ‘97 Bantam Majors (White) collected two more wins over the weekend. In EHF play, the Providence Capitals came to town on Saturday afternoon hoping to derail the Shamrocks. The Capitals came ready to play and opened the scoring in the first period for an early lead. The Shamrocks got things going in the second period when Mike Carroccino scored with Joe Panetta and Andrew Lobao earning assists. Eric Giguere scored a big unassisted goal in the third period to give the Shamrocks the lead. Johnny Perella put the game away minutes later scoring with Zach Martino and Wil Bethune chalking up assists for the final 3-2 win.

The ‘97 Bantam Majors (White) took to the road on Sunday for a non-league tilt with the New England Predators. Joe Panetta, Martino, Bethune, and Perella lit the lamp for the Shamrocks, while goalie Bobby Lombardi had an impressive game in goal and earned the 4-1 win.
